Buenos Aires

The Buenos Aires Experience

Night falls on Buenos Aires, and as you email home with this week’s update, you share your experiences in this beautiful, historic city: your visits to the Evita and MALBA Art Museums; the cobblestone, café-lined streets that took you back in time; and the soccer match where you cheered like a native porteño with your new classmates. You pass along greetings from your host family, and close by reaffirming that you chose your perfect study abroad program. The city has been a delight to explore, and the neighborhood La Boca, known for the vibrantly colored houses and pedestrian street the Cainito, where tango artists perform in the street, has become one of your favorite areas. This energetic port city has long been considered the gateway to Argentina, welcoming immigrants from all over Europe and Latin America. That’s why it is no longer surprising for you to see a German church sitting next to an Italian restaurant on a street named after a Spanish saint. Through your coursework at Austral and the varied MyEducation events each week, the stories of Buenos Aires are coming together to create a mosaic of culture, spirit, and connectedness, one that you can now place yourself in as well.

The CAPA Buenos Aires Program provides you with the opportunity to study Spanish while taking courses in art history, communications, business, economics, history, international relations, literature, politics, and sociology, all of which are taught in English. The four-month semester program and six-week summer program cater to all language abilities.

The program is hosted at Universidad Austral, a small, private university in the heart of Buenos Aires. You will take courses with students from Argentina and around the world, and there will be plenty of opportunities to make friends from across the globe while on campus. The campus has a library, computer labs, and cafeteria. Located between San Telmo and Puerto Madero, you can easily travel to other parts of the city by metro and bus.

The CAPA Buenos Aires program is designed to include your major program costs, leaving nothing to chance. You will live with host families throughout the city, and breakfast and dinner are included daily. You will also have access to a variety of student events, and the CAPA staff will be available 24/7 along the way. This program is ideal for those who want to experience the culture of Buenos Aires firsthand.

Why Buenos Aires?

A Message from Dr. Monica Pagano, Academic and Resident Director

Dear Student,

As one of the major world cities, Buenos Aires will provide you with plenty of learning opportunities and things to do every day.  With more than 14 million people within the city and mePhoto of this staff membertropolitan area, you can learn about the “porteños” (people from Buenos Aires) daily life.  Discover its rich culture and warm spirit by taking classes at one of its premiere universities, participating in a tango class or touring Evita Peron’s home.

Buenos Aires offers an extensive, year-round calendar of cultural activities, concerts and festivals. The CAPA Buenos Aires Program gives you a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of a global city. The MyEducation initiative is one of the best components of the CAPA Buenos Aires Program.  MyEducation encourages you to analyze and to explore Buenos Aires through a selection of suggested and some assigned activities, events, lectures and self-directed study tours.

The CAPA Buenos Aires Program at Universidad Austral strives to create an inclusive cultural environment where you will interact with Argentines. This will foster your academic, social and cultural experience. Some of the benefits of being in this city is to learn about its diversity from a different region of the world, learning a different way people make decisions and accept others.  A distinctive feature of the exciting and engaging academic life at CAPA Buenos Aires is the learning that takes place outside of the classroom. With courses such as Analyzing and Exploring the Global City, Buenos Aires you will be able to experience most of what the city has to offer.  By having the opportunity to engage with the city in this way, you are empowered to develop your academic skills.

You will need to be prepared to be challenged during this experience in a way that is different from the one you have at your home school.  There will be times where you will be amazed by being part of this colossal city, other times you will feel frustrated by its immense size, and at the end you will probably not want to leave! You will learn to love BA as we call it!

I am glad this amazing and complex city has sparked your interest since it is the place where I was born.  I hope you come to study with us and to share some of our favorite classes and field city sites soon!

Buenos Aires Program Location

The CAPA Buenos Aires program is hosted at Universidad Austral, which is located between San Telmo and Puerto Madero in the center of the city.  From this location, it is easy to reach many of the city’s famous landmarks, including the Casa Rosada and Plaza de Mayo, the Recoleta Cemetery and Museums, Calle Florida, and La Boca.

Universidad Austral is a small, private university founded in the 1970s; over 4,400 students are currently enrolled at its three campuses. Approximately 130 international students study at Austral each academic year. The school specializes in communications, law, business administration, accounting, engineering, medicine and nursing, as well as a variety of graduate programs.

CAPA has an office on-site at the university, and the CAPA Resident Director is responsible for all student services during the program. All CAPA students are also considered to be Austral students, and they will have access to the school’s resources. They will also be issued with an Austral student identification card that can be used for discounts around Argentina.

The university is housed in a refurbished five-story print factory. The entire building has wireless Internet, and there are computer labs located throughout the school. Printing and photocopying services are available through the photocopy center. Each floor has a number of classrooms and meeting rooms in a variety of configurations. In the classrooms, digital projectors, computers, DVD and VCRs are available for faculty.

Austral’s main library is open to all CAPA students. Most of the available texts are in Spanish, and students have borrowing privileges. This is also a great place to study as there is a large quiet area where talking and cell telephones are restricted. In the school’s fourth-floor cafeteria, students can choose between a salad bar, daily meal specials, or fast food.

CAPA hosts a number of activities each term to introduce students to the local culture. Through the MyEducation program, students are encouraged to go on walking tours of different parts of Buenos Aires, attend guest lectures on current events, visit a variety of museums, and join other students at theater nights and group dinners.

MyEducation brings theory to life and offers a unique and valuable opportunity to make the most out of your time studying in another country.
La Boca (Buenos Aires), Argentina
MyEducation activities are either staff-led or self-directed. Every week, one item will be selected as the MyEducation Event of the Week, and further information will be given on this highlighted event in hand-outs and in a weekly email, delivered directly to your inbox!

Some CAPA professors integrate MyEducation activities into their courses and assessment, so that you may have an opportunity to reflect upon, write about and present your experiences. Resident Director
As the Resident Director in Buenos Aires, I have oversight over all academics, faculty and student affairs on the CAPA Buenos Aires Program. I hold a Ph.D. in Administrative and Policy Studies in International Development Education from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA in Spanish and Cultural Studies and a BA in International Programs from Ohio University. While I was born in Buenos Aires, I lived and studied most of my life abroad. I believe that these experiences allow me to be a facilitator of a student’s experience.  I am truly passionate about what I do and about the place where I was born.  Buenos Aires offers one of the largest varieties of cultural events in the world, with a large calendar of performances and museum exhibits throughout the year. I look forward to being a cultural interpreter while students are experiencing the vibrancy of this mega city.

What Students say about CAPA
One of my favorite things about living in Buenos Aires is getting to experience each of the different barrios (neighborhoods) in the city. Every day I always end up passing through several barrios either on my way to school, running errands or out with friends. I love each section of the city because each one is so incredibly alive and has its own unique sights and sounds to offer.
